Developed by Biofeedback Therapist Jennifer Stephens, M.A.

"Jennifer Stephens first approached me about her interest in the treatment of urinary incontinence in 1992...When Jennifer described newer bladder control exercises which seemingly offered a “risk-free” alternative to surgery, I was very interested if slightly skeptical. At that time, there were only a few studies which discussed “pelvic floor rehabilitation” via biofeedback techniques. Jennifer’s experience with biofeedback and her excitement over its use to improve pelvic floor strength and decrease incontinence convinced me to look further.

I decided to take a chance on this new approach to incontinence and was not disappointed by what I observed over the years to come. My patients were clearly getting better after seeing Jennifer...."

I think i've developed an overactive bladder?

Question: I think i've developed an overactive bladder?

(Posted by: jimmy on 2009-07-14 07:31:27)

I'm 17 and I noticed that as soon as I got my part time summer job I was peeing quite a bit more frequently. Now in the past week I've started waking up in the middle of the night because I have to pee so bad, I am a male, and the only thing that's changed about my lifestyle was getting this job, and all I do in the job is sit at a computer, is there any way to reverse this?

At your job, have you started drinking anything that you wouldn't normally have had before (especially coffee, tea, or caffeinated soda)? Caffeine is a major bladder irritant as well as a diuretic, meaning it makes your body produce more urine AND your bladder is unable to hold as much due to the irritation. Certain types of artifical sweeteners (Nutrasweet) can have the same effect, so if you are drinking any diet drinks you might want to look into that. The other thing I can think of is, with all the sitting at the computer for your job, is that taking the place of more strenuous or outdoor activities that you used to do before you got the job? If that's the case, you are probably losing less of your body's water intake to things like sweat than you were before... and that extra water has to go somewhere. Although you still want to drink a healthy amount, you can afford to drink less on days when you won't be as active. Also, you can try to drink more of your liquids early in the day so you're less likely to be thirsty (and then fill up your bladder) late at night. If those two explanations don't fit, then you may actually have developed overactive bladder. No one really knows why people develop this condition, it just happens to some for no apparent reason. Talk to your doctor and see about trying one of the medications for it (there are several different types) if it's affecting your life enough that you feel you have to do something about it. Stress can also be a trigger for this and many other medical issues, so if your new job is causing you added stress that may be a contributing factor. It's really up to you whether you need to do anything about it, but if it's affecting your life enough to severly bug you, talk to your doctor.

There is a medication for overactive bladder. Best to consult with your doctor. You are only 17, so it's hard to believe you have benign prostate disease (enlargement of the prostate)
